The British landscape artist Alfred Fontville De Breanski Jr came from a family of painters, including his father Alfred Fontville De Breanski Sr, from which he first began to learn the craft and with whom he went on to share a very similar subject matter. He studied at the St. Martin’s School of Art and, during 1890s travelled to France, like many painters of the era. He became acquainted with James Abbot McNeill Whistler and was exposed to Belle Epoque and Impressionist techniques, the influence of which became manifest on his return to Britain in his handling of light and brushwork. The wild natural vistas of Scotland and Wales appear most frequently in Alfred Fontville De Breanski Jr’s work, as in this painting. Here, the rendering of low-lying cloud over the slopes is particularly spectacular.
