Description
These boxes, often called “tine” or “kiste”, were commonly used in Norway during the 19th century for storing valuable items, including clothing or keepsakes. The chest is made of wood and features a hinged lid with a metal clasp. The exterior is painted with floral motifs in a style typical of Rosemaling, a decorative folk art form that originated in rural Norway. The colors are vibrant, with a palette of reds, greens, yellows, and blues against a darker background. The box stands on small feet and has a slightly rounded top. The overall condition appears to be well-preserved, suggesting it has been carefully maintained as an antique.
Inscription translated from a traditional Norwegian dialect –
“In this chest you can hide gifts from those who cannot forget you”
